Thursday, 30 October 2014

Trying to integrate fun into our  increasingly fast-paced, stressful lives that are filled with responsibilities can be a daunting task to many . But every once in a while we need to use our  reserves of energy for something more fun. Therefore, the Youth Wing of the Goan Community of Oman (GCO), organized the “FUN SPORTS 2014” on Friday 17th October 2014, in  Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Ruwi at the Basketball Court.
The focus of the event was pure entertainment, opportunity for enjoyment and socialization between all communities of our parish..

As the teams registered themselves, participants were given badges matching their team names. We had 5 mixed age group teams, comprising of 20 mem bers each, which were inspired by names of saints like St. Francis Xavier, Don Bosco, St. Peter, St. Paul and St. Anthony.

To mark the beginning of the event we had a march past by all the participating teams, led by their chosen team captains holding team name plaque cards.  It was a delightful and disciplined spectacle as discipline is also the spirit of sports. Father Wilson Rumao, assistant parish priest, led us with an opening prayer and declared the Fun Sports open.
The highlights of the sports were the four games that suited all the age groups, teens, youth and adults who participated with great enthusiasm and energy. Our in-house DJ kept the crowd in a merry mood with great music during the games and teams were awarded points at the end of each game which led to their grand total.
St. Francis Xavier emerged winners of the event, the second place was bagged by St. Peter and the third place by St. Anthony.
All teams were treated to snacks and soft drinks courtesy GCO. At the end, the event was a success with wonderful sporting spirits and funniest moments captured; a great way to relieve stress. Everyone went away smiling having had an enjoyable evening

ISC Box Cricket PDF Print

Wednesday, 24 September 2014
The first one day ISC ‘Box Cricket Tournament’ was organized on 5 September 2014 at the Al Bustan grounds in Wadi Kabir. The matches started at 7.30 am.
Goan Wing registered two teams - Goan Zuari and Goan Mandovi. Our teams had mixed luck. While Zuari team provided entertaining cricket until the knockout stages the Mandovi team was unfortunate to get knocked out in the semifinals.
The day was very hot with temperatures crossing 40 degrees but nothing deterred the supporters including the family members, small children, friends and Goan Wing committee members from giving boisterous encouragement to the players on the pitch. It was also an opportunity where a good number of new members were registered to the wing.
Bhal Joshi, the sports secretary of Goan Wing did a marvelous job. At a very short notice he managed to bring together two teams even though it was the first time that the Goan Wing participated in any cricket tournament. Well accomplished Bhal and best wishes for all future endeavours.
On behalf of Goan Wing the convener, Mr. Anthony Goes, would like to express his gratitude to all those who contributed to make the day a success and an enjoyable experience for everyone.

GCO Christmas Tree Party 2013 PDF Print
Written by Gayle Veronica Araujo
Saturday, 14 December 2013
A kids' Christmas party always brings everyone together for a fun event and creates lasting memories for the little ones. In lieu of the same the Goan community of Oman(GCO) organized a Christmas tree party for goan kids of all religious groups between the ages of 5 to15 . The program was held at the Parish Hall of Sts. Peter and Paul Church, Ruwi on Saturday, 14th December 2013 from 5:30 pm to 8:00 pm.
We all know how children are very aware of Santa making that list to give children lots of presents if they have been on their best behavior.  So to ensure that  buzz of excitement and remind them all, that a visit from Santa is not far away, and that he only visits little children who are good ,as and when they arrived each boy and girl was given a tiny badge with their name on it saying they have been good girl and good boy this year.
The evening started off with the children being led with an opening prayer by our GCO member Mr.Clifford Alphonso invoking God’s blessings on all the little ones present and their families. This was followed with our compere asking some of the kids what they had asked Santa for this Christmas. Some of the requests were modest, some heartwarming and some downright hilarious.
The highlight for the evening was the presence of a Christmas band that kept the kids entertained with danceable Christmas music along with our DJ that helped celebrate the evening with great foot tapping beats. We had two games following a dance session that were Christmas themed as well, passing Santa’s hat and pinning the carrot on the snowman.
A really special finale was an early visit from Santa himself, to hand everyone chocolates and to cut a special Christmas cake along with all the children. But we didn’t make it that easy on them. The children were sent out on a hunt to find Santa and returned successfully finding him and came dancing into the hall to the tunes of the famous Christmas carols played by the band.
It’s natural for children to associate Christmas with receiving presents, so our festive evening ended with the presentation of gifts by Santa for all the children and gifts for the winners of both the games, followed with a group photograph with all the volunteers and GCO members.
The GCO would like to take this opportunity to thank each and every one who made this evening a success and a special thank you, to all you parents, for lending us your constant support. May God bless each and every one of you and your families abundantly.
