GCO Picnic 2012 PDF Print

The Goan community of Oman (GCO) organized its annual picnic on Friday 19th of October at the Barka farm. Assembly was at 8 o’clock at the Ruwi post office in CBD.

Luckily the weather was with us, and all were looking forward to some good-natured and wholesome fun. We departed to the farm in 3 buses as we sang goan songs and played travel games till we reached our destination.

The picnic began with a morning prayer led by our spiritual coordinator of the GCO Mrs. Sara Fernandes, followed by breakfast as the DJ entertained the picnickers with some light music. After breakfast, we moved on to have our first game of the day for the ladies. It was a balloon race in which they had to place a balloon in between their knees and race to the finish line without dropping it down. There were semis and then a final. A very enthusiastic group of ladies indeed.

Next we had a game for the youth. They had to pass a marker pen using their toes with hands at the back. It was highly amusing to watch them try to balance and pass the marker. As and when the DJ stopped the music the one with the marker got out and finally emerged one winner. The two games were followed with a dance session. Dj’s Akshay and Sean played lovely slow and jive numbers that kept the picnickers tapping their feet. No goan picnic is complete without the famous Goan masalas. Everybody danced very enthusiastically till lunch time. The youth had a fabulous time with recent foot tapping numbers as well and in the meanwhile the crowd also used the swimming pool to maximum advantage to beat the heat.

After lunch all joined in religiously for the divine mercy prayer at 3 o’clock lead by our GCO committee member Mrs. Ida Lopez. Then it was time for the age old game of housie. We had lovely prizes up for grabs sponsored by Omantel, Maze, Fahmy Furniture and Muna Noor. After the game of housie, we had a game for our strapping men in the picnic. They had to tie an inflated balloon to their foot and when the music begun, with their hands at the back, had to try and burst their opponents balloons. The last man standing was the winner.

The evening ended with a mention of all our upcoming events for the year and prize distribution for the winners of all the games .The vote of thanks was given by Mr. Herman Estibeiro, Cultural Coordinator of the GCO.

We would like to thank our sponsors and all the members who were directly or indirectly involved in the organization of the picnic and look forward to your unending support as always.

The world we live in, is growing increasingly fast-paced, stressful, and filled with responsibility. Everyone needs some time to relax and have some recreation. Therefore, the Youth Wing of the Goan Community of Oman (GCO), organized the “FUN SPORTS 2012” on Friday 14th September 2012, in  Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Ruwi at the Basketball Court.

The focus of the event was pure entertainment, opportunity for fun and socialization between all communities of our parishes.

We had 5 mixed age group teams, comprising of 20 members each, which were inspired by names of saints like St. Francis Xavier, Don Bosco, St. Peter, St. Paul and St. Anthony.

As the teams registered themselves, participants were tied with ribbons matching their team names. Father Wilson, assistant parish priest, led us with an opening prayer and declared the Fun Sports open. The event began with a march past by all the participating teams, led by their chosen team captains holding team name plaque cards.  It was a fun filled spectacle organized by the youth members of the committee.

The highlights of the sports were the four games that suited all the age groups, teens, youth and adults who participated with great enthusiasm and energy. Our in-house DJ kept the crowd in a cheery mood with great music during the games and teams were awarded points at the end of each game which led to their grand total.

St. Francis Xavier emerged winners of the event, the second place was bagged by St. Paul and the third place by St. Anthony.

GCO would like to take this opportunity to thank Omantel, Khimji Ramdas, Al-Felaij Plastics, Oman Refreshments Co. (Pepsi) and Mr. Sebastian Coelho of METLIFE who were our sponsors for the event.  Our special thanks to Talents for the sound system.

At the end, the event was a success with wonderful sporting spirits and funniest moments captured; a great way to relieve stress.

The GCO Youth organized the “YOUTH MASQUERADE BALL 2012” on Thursday 10th May 2012 in the church hall of Sts. Peter and Paul, Ruwi and was open to all Christian Youth.

After the 8:15 pm mass and distribution of certificates, etc. for the catechism children, the event began with the introduction of the members of the GCO and the team involved in the organization of the event, followed by the upcoming events of the GCO for the year 2012.

Mr. Sebastiao Boney Vas, Sports coordinator of the GCO, led with an opening prayer invoking the blessings of our Heavenly Father and asking our blessed Mother to intercede for each of us, following which the dance floor was opened to the youth.  Our Dj’s for the night played tunes that the youth could not resist and continued to be on the dance floor from the beginning to the very end.  Moreover, our anchors Makhushla Santimano and Christopher Coloso did a wonderful job with their witty jokes and ensuring everyone was on the dance floor.

It was announced that there would be a prize for the best and most creative “MASK” which was bagged by Ms. Samantha D’souza and was awarded by Mr. Savio Martyres, General Secretary of the GCO.

During the whole program, a lot of spot prizes were given away and one of the most important highlights of the Youth Masquerade Ball was the crowning of the ‘Masquerade King and Queen’.

This time the team decided to do it a little differently. The king and queen were selected based on their popularity amongst friends and family on FACEBOOK. This way everyone got an equal opportunity to reach out to their friends and family and the decision would be unbiased. Those willing to participate had to send us their recent photograph. The photograph with the maximum number of LIKES was declared the winner.

Master Clef D‘souza and Ms. Kimberly Pearl Pereira were crowned Youth Masquerade King and Queen 2012 by Mr. Herman Estebeiro, Cultural Coordinator of the GCO.

The Youth Masquerade Ball 2012 was a resounding success leaving a smile on everyone’s face at the end of the night. We urge all the Youth to come to support, encourage and be a part of all upcoming events organized by the GCO with all their family members and friends.

The Konkani Tiatr “Public II” held on 9th September, 2011 at Ruwi Parish Church Hall, was a splendid success, which could be witnessed by anyone who attended the show.  The hall was jammed packed and the audience cheered with appreciation to the sequence of songs sung by the artist, as many of them were called up again and again to repeat their song on the stage.  The comedy by Selvy and Janet was outstanding and one could notice tears of laughter roll down the cheeks of the audience.

On behalf of the GCO Managing Committee, I take this opportunity to thank the goan community for their participation, without which, this event would not be successful. We would also like to thank all our sponsors who supported us unconditionally to make this event possible.

The pictures of the tiatr may be viewed in the Photo Gallery of this website.

Easter Fiesta 23 April 2009 PDF Print

What a splendid Easter Fiesta it was! Lovely weather, perfect ambience, such a beautifully decorated hall, susegado outdoors seating, sumptuous buffet with well pickled sorpotel, prizes galore, great music from two top bands, children’s games, dancing and more dancing. But the best part of it all was the wonderful turnout of Goans and their guests. It was an evening to remember. Sadly, we couldn’t manage a venue on another day, and so many more could not attend due to First Holy Communion parties.

Kudos to Anthony Lourence for his most able leadership that ensured perfection and everybody’s cooperation. He was ably assisted by Boney Vas, who worked most zealously to see that everything went off as planned.

The GCO Managing Committee records its immense gratitude to:
  • Savio Carvalho: The many colourful banners and posters displaying the GCO logo, volunteer badges, and novelty dance GCO caps
  • Savio Martyres: Hall and outside decorations
  • Talentz: Lights and sound systems
  • Bosco D’Souza: Coordinating the PA system and video display
  • Seby Fernandes: Video camera
  • Domingos D’Souza: Sale of tickets, gate arrangements
  • Manuel and Joyce Fernandes: Cooking sorpotel
  • Sebastian Almeida: Tables
  • Leila de Souza: Table decorations
  • Shaliny Henriques: Casting the program and behind the stage arrangements
  • Samantha Vas, Michael Fernandes and Isidore Fernandes: Compères
  • GoAfrica and Cross Connections: Great music that had everyone continuously on their toes
  • Fr. John Fernandaz and Holy Spirit Church Ghala: Rental of the premises
  • Sponsors: OUA Travels (two tickets Muscat-Goa return), Air Arabia (two tickets Muscat-Goa return), Talentz (gifts for spot prizes), Al Hamadi Fisheries (pork for sorpotel, brunch voucher for best dancing couple), Fahmy Furniture (table cloths stitched and gifted specially for the occasion).
